Christian McCaffrey’s contract details: What is his salary and how many years does he have left?

Christian McCaffrey is the No. 1 ranked running back in NFL this season, recording more than 1,000 yards of carries for 12 touchdowns. He is one of the league’s most dynamic offensive players and a key part of the San Francisco 49ers’ multi-faceted gameplan, but his arrival from the Carolina Panthers did not break the bank.

Despite being an MVP finalist he has a salary cap hit of just $3.424 million in 2023, ranking him 18th among running backs this season.

So how did the 49ers capture a player of McCaffrey’s talents without taking a major cap hit? It’s all to do with the unique structuring of his current 49ers deal that allowed the team to bring in a bona fide star while also strengthening in other areas.

What is Christian McCaffrey’s salary?

In April 2020 McCaffrey, often referred to as Run CMC, signed a four-year $64million contract extension with the Carolina Panthers, a deal that made him the highest-paid running in league History. He starred for the Panthers but was traded to the 49ers in October 2022 as part of a blockbuster package, seeing four early draft picks head to Carolina in return.

So how much does McCaffrey earn in San Francisco? His base salary for 2024 is $11,800,000, with a workout bonus of $200,000. In 2025 his base figure will rise slightly to $12,000,000.

When he signed for the 49ers his deal was restructured, adding two additional void years at the end of his deal to help spread the financial commitments over a longer period.

“It just gives us some room,” 49ers general manager John Lynch said of the altered deal. “We were pressed right up there when we were to sign our rookies. We wanted to have some flexibility and it made sense. Christian’s going to be here, simple conversion, and we did it, and we’re thankful to Christian for agreeing to do it. Good thing for him. Good thing for us.”

What is a void year in NFL contracts?

The financial outlay for the 49ers may seem fairly modest considering the $64 million four-year deal that McCaffrey was on at the Panthers. That original package, however, included a $21.5 million signing bonus, which Carolina were accountable for when he was traded, paying up a large proportion of McCaffrey’s total earnings.

McCaffrey is signed to the 49ers through 2025 but his deal has an extra two void years at the end, allowing the team to park some outstanding payments. San Francisco could not pay his entire salary up front and stay within the salary cap so the final $6.4 million of his salary is slated for 2026 and 2027.

This may seem like an easy get-around for the 49ers but they will be liable to pay up the remainder of McCaffrey’s contract at the end of 2025, unless his playing contract is extended. Once a player reaches the end of their playing contract the team is liable to pay up all outstanding bonuses owed to the player.

Speaking on the one-year anniversary of Run CMC’s move to San Francisco, head coach Kyle Shanahan was full of praise for the star running back.

“The example he sets for everybody and the guy is, I mean, he reminds me of just a basic mentality, like a walk-on guy who’s just trying to get people’s attention for working so hard,” he said.
