Everton 2-2 Tottenham: Player ratings as Toffees snatch point in stoppage time

Image
Jarrad Branthwaite produced a 95th-minute equaliser to earn Everton a 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday. Richarlison came back to haunt his former employers, executing two wonderful finishes to give Spurs a first-half lead despite Jack Harrison's fortuitous goal after half-an-hour. Everton huffed and puffed in the second half as Tottenham also sought a third on the break, but the hosts eventually grabbed an equaliser in stoppage-time after Branthwaite's header levelled proceedings late on. How the game unfolded It took just four minutes for the inevitable to happen at Goodison Park, former Everton forward Richarlison netting against the Toffees to give Tottenham the lead. Destiny Udogie picked him out with a lovely cutback from the left-hand side and the Brazilian lifted a fine finish above Jordan Pickford to continue his rich vein of form. Everton did their best to respond with pressure on the Tottenham goal, putting ball after ball into the pen...

Arsenal 5-0 Crystal Palace: Player ratings as Gabriel stars in routine Gunners victory

Image
Arsenal eased to a 5-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday lunchtime at the Emirates Stadium, bringing a four-game winless run in all competitions to an end. The Gunners took the lead early in the first half, centre-back Gabriel climbing above the Palace defence to head the hosts in front. The defender then struck again before the break, another far-post header offering Mikel Arteta's side a two-goal cushion. In a straightforward second half, Leandro Trossard managed to grab a third for Arsenal with 59 minutes on the clock before Gabriel Martinelli's stoppage-time brace gave the Gunners a Health y victory after their mini-break. How the game unfolded After successive Premier League defeats, Arsenal knew the importance of coming away from Saturday's early kick-off with all three points. However, it didn't take the Gunners too long to punish Crystal Palace's five-man defence. Declan Rice swung in a wonderful far-post corner from Arsenal's left-hand side just ...

Man Utd 3-2 Aston Villa: Player ratings as Hojlund strikes to start Ratcliffe era with win

Image
The Sir Jim Ratcliffe era at Old Trafford got off to the perfect start as Manchester United roared to a 3-2 comeback victory over Aston Villa on Boxing Day. United were comically poor in defence as they conceded from two set-pieces in the first half, but from that point onwards, the Red Devils were the better team and they put on a show for INEOS representative Sir Dave Brailsford, who was watching on from the stands. Alejandro Garnacho netted twice after the break, having already seen a goal ruled out for offside, before Rasmus Hojlund netted his long-awaited first league goal late on to seal a dramatic victory. How the game unfolded Villa marginally had the better of the opening stages, although it was Christian Eriksen who had the first real sight of goal ten minutes in as he sent a long-range strike fizzing straight into the gloves of Emiliano Martinez. 22 minutes in, Villa took the lead in bizarre circumstances. McGinn floated in a free kick which bounced through a crowded six-...

Wolves 2-1 Chelsea: Player ratings as Matt Doherty strike seals victory

Image
Christopher Nkunku's first goal for Chelsea couldn't save his side from defeat as Wolves secured a well-deserved victory at Molineux on Christmas Eve. After a tight first half, Mario Lemina headed in the opener in the 51st minute. The Wanderers held off pressure from the Blues before substitute Matt Doherty vitally doubled their lead in second-half stoppage time. Nkunku was left free to nod in a cross from Raheem Sterling to reduce the deficit, but no equaliser came as Wolves moved up to 11th, level on points with Chelsea. How the game unfolded Chelsea were without usual midfield pairing Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, leaving Lesley Ugochukwu to partner Conor Gallagher as the visitors made a bright start. A smart challenge was needed from Lemina to stop Armando Broja getting a shot away after Raheem Sterling wriggled from on the left. The Blues again failed to take advantage of a promising situation in the 11th minute as Malo Gusto's cross evaded Broja before Gallagher...

West Ham 2-0 Man Utd: Player ratings as Bowen & Kudus stun poor Red Devils

Image
Second-half goals from Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus earned West Ham United a 2-0 win at home to Manchester United on Saturday afternoon, sending the hosts above their visitors in the Premier League table. Ahead of kick-off, David Moyes unconvincingly insisted: "I've always enjoyed playing Manchester United." The former Old Trafford boss would have been satisfied with his side's final result before Christmas but it was not a spectacle to savour. Bowen broke the deadlock in style as Lucas Paqueta crafted both goals separated by six second-half minutes but West Ham owed a lot of their result to United's slack display. How the game unfolded Taking the same joyless approach which quelled the Anfield din, Manchester United subdued a sleepy London Stadium still waking up for the lunchtime kick-off. Fittingly, the only fleeting sights of goal in the first half were born out of errors. Kudus aimed a dozy back-pass straight at a white shirt half an hour in. Antony gobbl...

Luton 1-0 Newcastle: Player ratings as Magpies beaten by spirited Hatters

Image
Newcastle United fell to a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Luton Town on Saturday afternoon thanks to Andros Townsend's header. Luton took a one-goal advantage into the first-half break, Townsend heading home at the far post from a corner. A dominant performance from the Hatters perhaps could have had them further in front, but Ross Barkley's fierce strike smashed the crossbar and stayed out. Despite Newcastle's best efforts, they couldn't find an equaliser. The closest they came was Alexander Isak's offside effort just after the hour mark, but ultimately the Hatters secured a memorable win. How the game unfolded After a traumatic and emotional encounter with Bournemouth last weekend following captain Tom Lockyer's cardiac arrest, Luton returned to action against Newcastle. Fortunately, the Welsh defender is now in a stable condition and recovering at home, likely watching on as his side tangled with Eddie Howe's men at Kenilworth Road. Despite a bright start fr...
